The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission. Even though I'm the Admin and only account.

I'm trying to change permissions in my Application Support folder but I keep getting this error. I saw someone post this:

To disable System Integrity Protection, you can do the following:

  1. Boot into the Recovery HD by restarting whilst holding ⌘R.
  2. Open Terminal (from the Utilities menu).
  3. Run the following command in Terminal:
csrutil disable
  1. Restart.

My question is this, does this fix the problem? And how do I re enable csruitil once the permission I want changed is changed?

Fix what problem? Those instructions will disable Apple's System Integrity Protection (SIP) feature and should only be attempted (if ever) when you are absolutely sure you know what you are doing and its ramifications. The "worst case" scenario with "messing with" files in the SIP-protected folders is that you will have to completely re-install macOS.

Ref:

If you still want to take this risk, to re-enable SIP, you would go through the same steps, but use: csrutil enable instead. Again, this is not recommended. It may help if you can provide us with more details on what you are trying to do so we can better assist you.

To re enable SIP you just type

csrutil enable

and press Return.

that easy.

The other thing you should know that macOS Catalina effectively splits your disk into two partitions

Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data.

The Macintosh HD partition is set as Read Only and is owned by the System and no matter what you do

you cannot change the permissions, even though you are an administrator, and paid thousands for your mac.

If this Applications Support folder is in the root Library you cannot change its permissions.

If this Applications Support folder is in the Users/<Home>/ Library, then that is on the

Macintosh HD - Data partition then you can change the permissions and do not need to disable SIP to do so.

The Macintosh HD - Data is read and write and is for your personal data.

It is not a macOS issue, as every other third party software works, I reckon they just cannot be bothered to rewrite

it for Catalina or Big Sur.

If the Application Support folder is the one in your Users/<Home> folder then you should be able to change the permissions without issue.

Have you asked the Silhouette developer what to do, do not be fobbed of by it is an macOS issue, if they sell this software as compatible with Catalina they have an obligation to you the customer to make sure it works.

It does look like I can change permission Users/<Home>/ Library and I already have read/write permissions on in there.

The reason I thought to change this is because I saw another post on here where they changed that to get a piece of software to work. Which is the main reason I'm trying to change permission.

I can't run this Silhouette Studio software. That thread is here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252544571

It wants Administration Permission to run and osascript wants to make changes. Developer says it's a MacOS issue.

Eau Rouge explained that Catalina splits the HD into two partitions, which made sense. I was trying to give admin permissions in the Application Support folder in <Home> in order to try and fix an issue with a piece of software I'm trying to install. I was following this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5746112?answerId=27412849022#27412849022 and realize it's old.

Here is the last email I got from Silhouette

"After reviewing the prompts you get a bit more, the Osascript and login in are things you would need to talk to Apple about. As we are only able to help with the error on the bottom, but not the Osascript and admin passwords. We do apologize for the inconvenience, but do recommend contacting apple before moving forward with the software."

I've attached the original screenshot. These are the prompts (in order) that I receive when trying to install their software. Note: the software never launches but I still get that last message.

I'll ask them if this is Catalina/Big Sur compatible.

As for this, I do have read/write permission.

All software needs to be installed from an admin account, there is no need to be paranoid.

If you can get it to install will it run.

It does say that will run on Mac OS X 10.10 and above, 10.10 was launched in 2014 and we are 7 years on from that

with Big Sur and Catalina with this new approach to having a system drive and a user drive, perhaps something that

had not envisaged when they wrote the software.

The classic, 'its an Apple issue or macOS issue' is a brush off, get them to give you better answers,

often software developers and operating system developers like to play this verbal ping pong

leaving the customer high and dry. It is clearly not helpful.

Have you asked Apple about this, what did they say.

The only account on this computer is mine/admin. I'm only paranoid because I've never seen this type of message before.

If you can get it to install will it run.

Yes. But I can't confirm 100% but it does seem like it works.

Have you asked Apple about this, what did they say.

Re: if this software is compatible with Catalina or Big Sur, I'm waiting on their response. The last release to their software was Jan. 25th, 2021. One would hope.

From Silhouette.

Version 4.4.464 is compatible with Big Sur and Catalina. Please ensure that is the version you are downloading. As OSAScript, is not part of installer or software.

I did allow permission the other day but deleted everything per their instructions. Now I'm nervous since they're saying osascript isn't theirs. oops.
