Does apple notify you if you have a virus? I was on my iPod touch and it said my device had a virus I had to get rid of.

No, unless you've just manually uploaded a file containing one to their servers. Other websites may check them as well, but any other popup in a macOS or iOS web browser warning of one is a scam.
