.HEIC, .AAE, .MOV error messages in Photos app

using iPhone 11 to take pix on 3/6/21, ALL of them are in .HEIC (.AAE, .MOV) files (vs. JPG, .mp4, ...known extensions).

  • via Finder, began edits: color editing/cropping (using Preview)

note: in Finder before edits: (100) .AAE (100) ..HEIC (50) .MOV (both "LIVE" photos, and videos)

After learning about .HEIC (+.AAE correlated) files, apparently new extensions "preserve changes & edits"...and "original" data info. (sounded great!)

Import file(s) into Photos app to add "keywords, people, location", usual stuff.

But something happened in Photos app after my 1st run through of all the files:

  • could see the photos (some before & after)
  • images no longer "edit" in Photos app
  • showed error for every image (before + after edits).
  • over200 images!

note: Finder after edits: (6) .AAE (14) .heic (not HEIC), (5) .mov (not .MOV

(note: hard drive suddenly OUT of Disk Space?!? eg: 0 of 145GB (usually 22GB available).

What is going on? How are these files "handled" uniquely - that is unknown to me?!

thx

So you are storing the image files on iCloud Drive. Are you trying to import them to Photos for Mac as referenced files (with the Photos Preference "Importing : Copy into the library" disabled? This will not work. Photos cannot reference items in a synced folder. It will break the references. And if we are using referenced originals, they must never be modified by external editors or moved around.

If filename extensions are missing, make sure, that the checkmark in "Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Show all Filename Extensions" is enabled.

Check also the Info for a file with a missing filename extension. Select the file, open the info with ⌘i, then look at the section "name & Extension". There is also a checkmark "Hide Extension", that needs to be disabled for each file.

iCloud is a sync service (It synchronises data across all your devices). The idea is to be able to access your data wherever you are, and on all your devices. So stuff stored in iCloud (folders or photos etc) are stored on all devices as well as in the cloud). Importantly - if you delete stuff on your computer it will also be deleted in iCloud.

iCloud is not a backup.

One proviso - if you choose "optimise mac storage" then iCloud drive will only store recently used files locally. This would NOT be suitable for referenced files in photos, as whenever they were removed from your mac by iCloud, then photos would lose the link to them. If you want to use optimised storage with Photos app, then you need to store the images in photos (import into the library) and then photos will transfer the masters to iCloud and keep small previews locally)

Disk space:

Filevault should just encrypt your data - not keep a mirror of it. And when you are logged in, it is decrypted - so should not be invisible. However, if you have other user accounts on your mac, also using filevault, then data in those accounts will not be decrypted - I am not sure if that would then be "invisible" or would just show as a single set of data for those users (I don't use filevault)

Another possibility for invisible data is if you use time machine, but don't have your backup volume connected. Then time machine will be taking snapshots of your files, and storing them in a way that is invisible to the filesystem. If that is the case then you should be able to get the space back by connecting the time machine backup volume and letting it complete a backup.

To find out where my space is used, I use disk inventory X

http://www.derlien.com/

Which gives a graphical and hierarchical list view of the space used.

However, it will only show you space taken by files that are visible to the filesystem (eg it won't show backup snapshots)

Where are the files stored, that you are trying to import to Photos?

And how did you access the items with Preview for editing? Did you export the Live Photos from Photos to a folder in the Finder to edit them? Or did you use Preview to download the files from the iPhone? preview cannot open videos, you would have to open the video component (.MOV) of the Live Photos in QuickTime Player, not Preview.

It would be less complicated to import the photos directly from the iPhone to Photos, and then use the Edit pane in Photos to crop the photos, trim the videos, add color adjustments. Photos 6 on Big Sur supports the editing of videos and you will avoid complications with a changed file format.

There is not much support for referenced files in Photos for Mac. It is very basic and just sufficient to migrate Aperture Libraries and iPhoto Libraries to Photos, so we can open the older libraries and then consolidate the referenced files into the library. I would not use it permanently, because there are no tools to work with it safely and efficiently. If you want to store the photos outside the Photos Library because lack of spca, put them onto an external volume with a wired connection, not into a synced folder like iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or DropBox. Syncing will break the references, even if the files are mirrored locally as shadow copies. The file system format of the external volume should be the same as the file system format of your system volume.

they were taken on iPhone 11, then transferred to MBAir (Big Sur).

note: images are stored in iCloud, not in Users/Pictures/ (due to low disk space - even prior to 3/9/21)

on my laptop, in iCloud Folder/Pictures/Folders/event 3/6/21

  • able to see all image files for 3/6/21

note: as mentioned above, file extensions changed and/or disappeared (eg: .AAE)

not aware that iCloud storage is redundant storage on my MacHD! i'm trying to imagine how iCloud actually works:

  • is it just a place for back-up (history)
  • or tracks Home Folder, as it is NOW?
  • if files are moved to iCloud, can they be "DEL" on my local HD?
  • how to be sure iCloud has my stuff?

spoke with support about hard disk space, and my concerns about images (dups dups dups), as well as "invisible" parts of my HD, taking up 50% of HD capacity!?

  • could it be iCloud storage?
  • could it be FlieVault (mirror image of HD)?
  • could it be previous MBPro (files, back-up, ...)?

they could not help me, nor did i have a better understanding of my HD.

after hours on the phone, there was no Support on that day. : (

so the referenced file concept is new to me - post crisis. learned about that in crises, followed directive to "uncheck: Copy to Photos (Users/Pictures/ photo.library)

  • because "physical files" are not in there currently
  • because of need for HD space savings
  • because unsure of Photos functions (iOS v OSX)

file extensions are visible for: MacHD/User/

no issues there!
