iPad making loud noise

My iPad started making a loud noise that sounded like an airplane. Very loud and I could feel air blowing out of the bottom where you plug in the cord. I thought the internal battery was going to explode I was about to throw it outside onto my yard like it was a bomb, lol, but then I was finally able to shut it off. The loud noise and air continued for a couple seconds after I shut it off. Any ideas about what happened and is it safe to turn the iPad back on?
