iPhone XR screen sometimes won't rotate

My wife uses an iPhone XR (iOS 14.4), and from time to time the screen refuses to rotate. We have not discerned a pattern to this behavior—it just happens. Sometimes the problem seems to fix itself; sometimes she has to restart the device to get it to rotate.

I've read this discussion, and I can report that at Settings —> Display & Brightness, Zoom is set to standard. So that's not the cause. It happens often enough and at critical times to make her quite unhappy. She hasn't smashed the phone with a hammer ... yet.

Can anyone offer a plausible explanation for this behavior? And a cure? My iPhone 7+ rarely behaves this way. Is it a bug in this device?

Hello Lucas1948 and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It appears you are having some difficulty with screen rotation on an iPhone XR.

Please start by verifying the info here, which states: Rotate the screen on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

"Some apps don't support rotation, so your screen might not rotate even if Portrait Orientation Lock isn't turned on."

Please test with an Apple app, such as Notes or Calendar. Do they rotate properly? If not, you'll want to isolate this between a software or hardware issue. If you're already running the most up-to-date version of iOS (iOS 14.4.1 as of the time of this post), it may be beneficial to reinstall iOS on your device. While this shouldn’t affect any data stored on the iPhone, it would be a good idea to make sure you’ve got a backup in place: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Once you’ve successfully backed up your device, follow these steps to reinstall iOS, making sure to choose “Update” when prompted: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Cheers.

Good evening, revbill222—Your reply prompted me to check the version of iOS, and sure enough I'd missed the update to 14.4.1. Well, that's done. Now I'd like to respond to your questions and add to the information I provided in my OP.

The behavior I described occurs at random, it seems, while my wife is using common iPhone apps: Messages, Mail, and Safari, for example. We both use apps that we know don't support landscape orientation—banking and medical care apps are two that come to mind. The teeth-grinding and cursing start when, say, Messages simply refuses to rotate. We've found that shutting down the misbehaving app and relaunching can help. When that fails, we shut down and restart the phone itself. Both those techniques can help, but don't you know it's a hassle when you're in a hurry.

As for reinstalling iOS—I have not done exactly what you suggested, but before my initial post I had reset her iPhone. I chose Settings—>General—>Reset—>Erase All Content and Settings. The article you linked to suggests that I should use those steps when I can't update or restore my iPhone. I had no trouble resetting the phone. Since resetting, the phone has behaved as it should.

This situation reminds me of when my car has displayed something that looks like trouble, but I can't make the problem appear once I've got a mechanic standing by. Everybody has had those experiences, and I suppose this could be something similar. Your thoughts?
