Unwanted dictation on iPhone 12

My iPhone 12 takes dictation whether I want it to or not. It picks up everything from the television to other people. I'm constantly having to correct it. My last phone would only work when I pushed the microphone icon How do I fix this?

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

Hi Mearbhall,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having some issues with dictation on your iPhone 12.

What exactly happens when your microphone picks up the TV or other sources? For instance, does Siri come up? Are you using headphones when this happens? If so, make sure the no buttons are being pressed.

From Settings > Siri & Search, are “Listen for ‘Hey Siri’” and “Press Home or Side Button for Siri” enabled? If so, test without them if possible and see if the same occurs. You can learn more about these features from Ask Siri, Dictation & Privacy.

Do you see a blue microphone icon in your status bar? If so, that may be Voice Control. Check out Use Voice Control on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Take care.

Mearbhall,

It sounds like you may be using VoiceOver. You can determine whether this may be the case by looking for a blue microphone in the right of your status bar. You can disable this feature or adjust some settings using the guidance from Change your VoiceOver settings on iPhone.

Does this happen with or without headphones? Test both to isolate this issue, if possible. Next, restart your iPhone. This simple step can help to resolve many iPhone issues.

Have a great day!

This isn’t really a Siri problem. It happens when I'm imputing a number into the telephone app, or most prevalent, when I'm in Safari trying to type or say an address. It picks up everything and then I’m constantly having to back up and start over. It’s very frustrating and time consuming. I would prefer the phone take dictation when I want it to, not when it wants to.
