I have a apple Mac that i bought approx 6 years ago but I have not been able to access it due to wrong password

I have a Mac that has sit idle for 4 years due to wrong password ( ex girlfriend)

do I need to take to apple store? or how do I sort

And as an alternative... if you haven’t used that Mac in four years, wipe it and reload with whatever recent or current version of macOS it might support; start over. On a six year old Mac, that’s probably Mojave, Catalina, or the current Big Sur.
