How can I retrieve mail that was lost

My mail account was not functioning properly. My service provider suggested deleting my mail account and then creating a new account. I was assured the mail on my machine would not be lost. But it was lost. I had around 50 emails in my inbox that I was saving as reference - things I needed to have on hand. How can I retrieve these emails? All emails that I had in various folders 'on My Mac' were untouched; just the contents of the inbox disappeared.

Was the Account POP or iMAP?

I suspect it was POP & messages were set to be removed from the Server on download. :(
