can't turn on app automatic downloads
New iPhone 12 mini and half the Apps won't update nor can I turn on Automatic updates.

Did you followed the steps in the 'How to turn on or turn off automatic updates on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch' section of:
How to manually update apps on your Apple device - Apple Support
If so, maybe those apps are not designed to work with iOS 14. Or could there be a problem with your payment method?
If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store – Apple Support
