Can I copy music from a CD directly to an external HD without importing music to my computer?

I have books of mix music CD's from olden times. I want to get rid of the disks and just move the music onto an external HD. I prefer not to import the music to iTunes/my computer and then move it from to the External hd if there's a way to just copy the CD directly. For anyone who has done this, how did you do it?

If they are MP3 or Data CDs you can just copy the files. If they are audio CDs then they have to be imported. You don't have to use Music for this, other software is available. You can also rip directly to the external drive rather to the system drive followed by a manual move/copy. Ripped media goes into your designated media folder.
