"There is no iMovie 11. iMovie '11(with the apostrophe) is a designation for iMovie version 9, an older version. iMovie 10.1.14 is the current version."

Can anyone explain to me what that means? And, If I buy a how to do it book, what version of iMovie should I be looking at?

You definitely should be looking at iMovie 10. iMovie 9 has been discontinued. It is confusing because iMovie 9 is sometimes called iMovie '11 (with an apostrophe) because it was introduced in year 2011.
