mum hoping to be able to continue to use for at least 2-3 years if possible.

That iPad model should get, at least another round of full support of iPadOS into the Fall of 2022.

After that, no one knows.

Third party app developers will continue to support that iPad for another two years, or so, after Apple ends its full support of a subset of older iOS devices.

I have a 2015/2016 iPad Pro and pretty much know it is going to get the next iPadOS version this Fall, which will be iPadOS 15.

So, that will be over 6-years of support ( closer to 7-years ) for my own iPad Pro.

So, I really wouldn't worry for, at least another 2-3 years, or so.

Nobody within the Apple Support Communities can provide a definitive answer as to how long support will continue for any model of iPad. Until Apple announce that update support has ended, this information is not known outside of Apple.

Past models of iPad have had typical active support lifetimes of four to six years - some longer. iPad Air2, released in 2014, remains in support after six years, 3 months. The iPad Air1 (released 2013), mini2 (2013) and mini3 (2014) whilst no longer receiving major update support, continue to receive “point” security updates when needed.

Hello scorcomp!

I have been reading and saw a post discussing around supportive life & longevity before it's completely dead.

Apple themselves release products with more than 7-8+ years of support left, so I wouldn't worry a little bit

Your particular device will have 5+ years left before it's end of security updates, lack of security & safety to personal belongings.

It's mainly hard to tell or release any data without a realistic answer, but it's up to 5+ years.

Have an amazing day!
