I click the bookmarks button on the ipad to show the Safari bookmarks in a sidebar. I click it again to remove that sidebar.
I would like to view the ipad Safari bookmarks full screen. As I can do on my iphone X in landscape view.

As stated, iOS/iPadOS for iPad does not support a full screen view of the Safari Favourites sidebar. You will, however, see a thumbnail view of your saved Favourites whenever you tap the New Tab icon in your Safari window.
As for Firefox on your Windows PC, if your install the Firefox browser on your iPad, you can simply synchronise your saved favourites in Firefox between your Firefox browsers on different devices - without affecting your Safari Favourites.

I installed Firefox and Edge. They have the same problem of not allowing bookmarks to be full screen on the ipad. Their ipad bookmarks sidebar is a little wider though than on Safari. 2 and 7/8 inches wide on Firefox and Edge. Versus 2 and 3/8 inch on Safari on ipad. In portrait view.

I just got this ipad, and I am kind of astonished by this. I was hoping to use Safari as default browser on both ipad and iphone X. Because I really like the easy bookmark syncing. But if I can't read the bookmarks, then the syncing does little good.
I am afraid to use Firefox on the iphone and ipad, because I have Firefox as default on my Windows 10 PC. I don't want to risk messing up the tens of thousands of bookmarks there by attempting any syncing.
I don't use Chrome on any of my devices because it deletes duplicate bookmarks, and there is no way to stop it.
I guess I will have to use the Edge browser on my iphone and ipad, and see if I can sync the bookmarks.
Thanks again. I wasn't clear before. I am not afraid of Firefox messing up Safari bookmarks, or vice versa. I am afraid of Firefox messing up Firefox bookmarks on multiple devices if syncing is attempted between Firefox on multiple devices. Plus I don't want that massive pile of bookmarks duplicated on multiple devices.
I will figure something out with Edge, Opera, etc. to solve the bookmark width problem. Hopefully one of those browsers will also sync between Apple devices between the same browser.
