My device was marked as lost despite it being in my possession. The number used wasn’t mine. What does this mean?

I was on a long trip home watching videos on my phone when it was all of a sudden locked and reported as lost despite it being in my possession and not having any other Apple device. The number on the Lock Screen wasn’t mine. What should I do?

iPhone 11, iOS 14

Your Apple ID was hacked and whoever hacked it put the phone in Lost mode.

Or the phone was never locked to your Apple ID, but was locked to a previous owner’s Apple ID and they marked it as Lost.

You would know which of these it might be. If it was the first, contact Apple’s account security team→Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security - Apple Support

If it was the 2nd you are permanently out of luck.
