iMac as monitor

I have a late 2012 intel 27 inch imac that I would like to use as a monitor for my macbook pro 2020 M1. There is no dedicated minidisplay port but as I understad the thunderbolt port works the same with regards to display?

If so, which cable do I need?

USB C to Minidisplay?

USB C to Thunderbolt?

Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt?

Please advise.

Older iMac desktop/Mac M1 Mini/Monitor question I have an iMac built in late 2013 and still running High Sierra. Will I be able to use it as a monitor with the Mac M1 Mini which I am thinking of purchasing? Using iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021) as an external monitor for MacBook Pro (14-inch, M1, 2021) I just got a new MacBook Pro (14-inch, M1, 2021) and would like to use my iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021) as an external monitor. I want to know if this is even possible? Both have the USBC ports. Do I still need the Thunderbolt cable? I've connected both with the USBC but nothing is working. I would love a step by step guide. The apple support page is not very helpful. (Connect a display to your Mac - Apple Support)

Hi mountain man,

Unfortunately, M1 Macs do not support Target Display Mode, so this functionality is impossible.
