MacBook Pro M1 WiFi issue

Hello everyone.

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro M1, and I am struggling with the WiFi connection since it first boot. I am running OSx 11.2.3 (20D91).

The WiFi connection is totally unstable and unreliable, even if it shows a good connection status. My iPhone has extremely better performance, and also my old 2012 Mac had it until its failure.

If I use a 5 GHz network, I can achieve a reasonable speed (about 50 Mbps), but it is totally unstable: the connection so often drops, especially when doing intense network tasks (i.e. video conferencing). The issue is even worse with 2.4 GHz networks.

Here the same speedtest with my iPhone

Here the net status

I am about 7 meters away from the router, if I move closer it works better, but I am very disappointed: I always worked from my desk, without any kind of issue, until trying this new Mac.

I already tried to set up the router as suggested by Apple, and also with other routers, I have similar problems.

Does anyone have any suggestions? (Moving closer to the router, or change it are not solutions: every other device here works, so also this M1 Mac does).

With my warmest regards,

Luca

This may be a little long but hopefully worth it for those of you using USB C hubs.

I had the same issue with my new 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro (and posted about it previously). It was intermittent, though. Ethernet still worked like a charm. They were very nice at Apple support, but they could not figure out the source after a bunch of calls. Because it was within my 90-day return period at Costco, I returned it and bought another one, figuring it was a bad wifi antenna. Now, the same thing is happening with the new one, but mainly right after it comes out of sleep (which is different behavior). I "usually" can resolve it by toggling my wifi on/off or restarting the machine. (So, I'm feeling a little guilty right now, which you'll know why after reading below because I otherwise loved that machine ... and I have been a Windows guy for the longest while.)

This morning after waking my machine from sleep, the same thing happened. Coincidentally, I was shopping yesterday on Amazon for a USB C hub for my daughter's MacBook Air and read one review that complained about the hub interfering with wifi connectivity. On a hunch just now, I unplugged my own USB C hub, and voila, my Speedtest.net download speeds returned to normal (e.g., 350/380 Mbps). I plugged it back in, and everything gradually slows down (eventually dropping to 1 Mbps to 25 Mbps). I repeated this process multiple times just now with the same consistent response.

My current setup is a USB C hub plugged into the USB C port on the right side of my machine. Connected to that hub is a powered USB-A hub. (I tried just now stretching the cords to their full lengths to create some separation, with no change.) Between the two hubs, I have connected the following devices: HDMI monitor, wired Logitech keyboard, wired Logitech mouse, Logitech HD 1080p webcam, Envato Wave 3 microphone (which is very new), and a Wacom tablet (just connected the other day for first time). I am using the HDMI port on the right side of the machine (so I can have dual monitors). On the left side, I have an SSD connected via USB C (also recently connected), and the audio jack connected to external speakers.

Things are sorta better now on their own, which typically happens, but not great. On a side note, once the problem occurs, Safari has a much harder time bouncing back than Chrome does, at least this morning it does. However, I just tried unchecking "Limit IP Address Tracking" as suggested above, and Safari is doing better than it was - now 185 Mbps on average versus Chrome's average of 220 Mbps. Neither of these speeds is as good as my top speeds without the hub plugged in.

On another note, I have no bluetooth devices connected to my machine (or hub). I disabled bluetooth anyway, but it doesn't seem to improve things back to the 350/380 Mbps range.

I will continue to diagnose and see if I can pinpoint the actual device causing the problem (which is probably the USB C hub). I may order a bunch of different hubs, but if you want one with a lot of ports, they're all third-party. I shelled out $69 yesterday to buy Apple's own USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, on top of another third-party one for my daughter, but that's only because it's for her. I typically am too cheap when buying things for myself (my MacBook being the sole exception ... my previous Windows laptop was $500), but I may now consider doing the same for myself. If I learn anything new, I will report here.

Sorry this is so long.

Having this exact same issue as well. I've tried the posted workarounds, but none of them work consistently for me. This is a massive pain as my company runs Virtual Desktops for our work computers, and the M1 mac constantly drops me from my work desktop. Additionally it constantly drops my connection on zoom. I know it's not the router as I can disconnect and reconnect and it immediately provides internet when I do, and also my wife's older macbook work's just fine.

It's frustrating that this seems to be an prevalent issue that Apple is simply ignoring. There are literally hundreds of threads just like this:

I just wanted to check in on this as well, as I too am having this issue and have had it across two M1 Pros.

I noticed it almost immediately when I got the M1 Pro a couple months ago and, luckily, was able to simply swap it out for a new one as Apple support could not figure out the issue and said they’d seen no reports of it.

Got my new M1 Pro, didn’t do anything with it that required a sustained internet connection for awhile (no video calls) but after a few weeks, it happened again and has continued to happen since (but I was outside the “swap it out” timeframe so I just have been dealing with it).

Has anyone figured out the cause or a fix?

Hello everyone, ok so good to know this a known connectivity issue apparently with MacBook Pro m1, in my case at first I thought it was my antivirus, but after uninstalling it, the problem continues, I should say in my home the internet connectivity is perfect, however at my university we use an eduroam connection and here my connection constantly drops, I’ve tried about everything with no solution, have anyone managed to solve the problem ?

Read every posting on this discussion and you may see that several useful solutions have already been posted in dozens of postings on this topic. But this discussion is already too long and too confusing (who is who with what system, and what peripherals?) to provide individual attention.

If you would like individual attentions, POST A NEW Discussion Topic and the specs of your Mac and your MacOS.

Also, be sure to include the what devices/adapters/cables you are using.

Hi guys! so I wrote in this community before because I was having problems with my wifi internet at uni, I even bought an Ethernet adaptor, but it turns out the problem was related to some Eduram licences renewal, 3 weeks later now they've fixed it so I don't need my ethernet adaptor now, my internet works perfectly now, however as some of you know the new OSX Monterrey comes with a new feature called Memory leaks (joking) so if you haven't updated it yet, do not update, if someone might redirect me to the OSX Monterrey memory leak rant forum, I mean to the OSX Monterrey memory leak temporary solutions I'd be thankful

thank you guys

What's the **** with the new M1 macbook pro ??

I just received my new macbook pro M1 Max and when i connect on the local wifi, it destroyed all the connection. if i disconnect it from the network the network comes again and stabilize, it is like there is a HUGE issue with the handling of the ip address of the new macbook pro M1 or something else with the network handling.

The problem is coming from the new M1 Macbook pro.

I have PC and other old macbook pro and this is working correctly. It took me long time to understand the issue were coming from the new MacBook.

Also i have exactly the same problem than others, after a restart it starts to work correctly and after this is the **** !!!

45000 $$$ for this ****

I'm really angry, this is not acceptable.

You should really pull up this awful issue in emergency to your engineers and your responsable.

I'm really disgusted...

The Ethernet problem is a DIFFERENT issue, and is said to be solved in the latest MacOS update.

I've spent a few hours on the phone and chat with Apple with nothing but the most basic of troubleshooting, to no avail. Safe mode, etc. I've even completely re-installed. But it's such an intermittent issue there isn't much they can do in one go. The issue for me is compounded because of how locked down Google Wifi is -- you can't split 2.4 and 5, you can't change the band, etc. Google is so overly confident their stuff is magic they won't even let you override their decisions.

In the meantime, as sad as I am to do it, I think I'm forced to return this expensive machine, and after being so unbelievably excited about the screen, the ports, the chip, etc -- but it's all moot if I can't make it through a presentation without losing my connection and switching to a hotspot.

Lastly, @Grant Bennet-Alder, please stop advocating for people to not post here. There are dozens of us behind the scenes watching these existing threads for confirmation, ideas, and themes -- so just chill and let people share their anecdotes.

I also am having the same issue on my brand new MacBook Pro M1 (Pro, 16", 16GB, 1TB).

The failures are intermittent and typically occur once every other day or so. (Today, it occurred twice.) Sometimes, I will be completely disconnected. At other times, the speed slows down to a crawl (e.g., video freezes). A few moments ago, my download speed on speedtest.net (Safari) dropped to 0.13 Mbps (before I ran into a test error and the test crashed). A few minutes before that, it was at 1.41 Mbps. Interestingly, during that run, the upload speed was 13.15 Mbps, which is normal for me. I ran the same test at the same time on my iPhone (Safari), and my speeds were typical. Restarting the machine clears up the issue. (I think disconnecting/reconnecting to wifi also does, but it may not last as well, as I am experiencing issues again as I compose this post.)

I understand your frustration. I kinda think it's an 802.11/ax issue.

So a newish Intel MBA might have 802.11/ax support in it and you might be out of luck.

But more importantly, OMG, my old (2019, that is) Intel was a horrible computer compared to this one. Fans always running if you are using just 1 CPU all the time, let alone 4 or 5 of them. This new laptop is shockingly fast and quiet and the fans never come on (I have the pro, which has fans but doesn't appear to need them).
