chrome_crashpad_handler Using +40% of CPU for no apparent useful purpose

Hi,

I suddenly started getting this new process in only when I have Skype open : chrome_crashpad_handler

I am on Mac OS 10.10.5 (yes but that's the OS that came with this laptop and it runs beautifully smoothly since 2014 and I'm not going to change it) + Skype 8.69.0.88 (up to date).

Little Snitch is also regularly informing me that this process would really like to connect to things like in2-prod-east-us2-23fa330.trafficmanager.net (it's actually trying to connect 55 times a second).

Does anyone know how to stop this nonsense that suddenly happened without me having even upgraded anything ?

Merci :)

I stand (insanely) corrected, apparently even though there is a "Check for Updates" option, the 8.59.0.77 version auto-updated... causing the issue to come back 😂

It's insane how stupid they are. We're just trying to help them keep their customers by using their app and they really try to get rid of us.

I'm going to keep a copy of 8.59.0.77 and just keep un/re-installing until I find a better alternative to Skype where they don't try so hard to make us leave. 😑

P. Phillips, you have completely solved this !

Indeed, that was the solution : revert to an older version of Skype.

For my case (Yosemite) I downloaded version 8.59.0.77 here https://skype.en.uptodown.com/mac/versions , and finally Skype is working properly again. Thank you Skype for adding previously non-existent problems.

And thank you very much P. Phillips, this is much better now 🙏🏻

Hey P. Philips, thanks for chipping in !

Yes Activity Monitor is how I found out about this process, its name is just that, "chrome_crashpad_handler", and it launches only while I have Skype open. If I try ending the process (force quit on my end, I don't have "end process button in the tool bar), it will just immediately open again.

UPDATE : For fun thanks to Little Snitch I located this process in my files, and trashed that moron (it was in Microsoft libraries somewhere, I really think this is related to Skype). It's slightly better now, but instead I'm getting the ReportCrash process now instead, using almost as much CPU 😝 Again, only while Skype is open.

Thanks, I tried both ways, and they do not prevent Skype from launching the chrome_crashpad_handler process continusously. Again this seems to me as Skype related because that process is found in /Applications/Skype.app/Contents/Frameworks/Electron Framework.framework/Versions/A/Helpers/chrome_crashpad_handler and only launching while Skype is open.

I'm really good with computers and haven't figured this out, I know this is a hard one !

How do you prevent Skype from automatically updating in this case? They removed that preference setting a while ago, so now Skype updates automatically whenever it feels like it.

I'm having the same issue as you on El Capitan and I just performed the same reinstall of the older version, but I do find myself wondering if I'm going to come back one day to find the problem has re-emerged after an automatic update.
