If you already tranferred everything to your new iPad, you'd better perform this procedure on the old device:--> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support , then recycle it, or give it away (instead of destroying it).

Attempting physical destruction of an iPad is inadvisable. Notwithstanding environmental issues, Li-ion batteries require special handling. These batteries are completely safe when handled correctly - however, they present a considerable fire risk if physically damaged or punctured.
If you wish to ensure that the iPad is properly and safely dismantled, please return the iPad to an Apple Store for recycling. Alternatively, a free shipping kit can be sent from Apple.
