iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 14.4) - video playback starts muted - why?

Hi folks,

This is really annoying me. I don't know whether the phone is behaving as it should be, whether there is a setting somewhere that I need to toggle or if this is an 'undocumented feature' (i.e. a bug) in either the phone or iOS.

Whenever I playback a video that I've taken with the phone, it ALWAYS starts muted and I have to remember to press the button under the video to unmute it.

Is this a 'feature' of the iPhone 12 Pro, of iOS 14.4 or is this a 'bug'.

Similarly, when sending an email, although selected to make the 'swoosh' sound, I generally get either nothing at all or a very brief 'burp'.

Thanks

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply.

Are you sure that the path [Settings > Mail, and disable "Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos"] is correct to resolve the video sound issue? In Settings > Mail there is no option on my iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 14.4) for Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos.

Your reply prompted a Google Search for "iOS 14.4 and Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos" which said that the setting was in Settings > Photos > Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos.

This was turned on, it is now turned off.

Regarding the 'swoosh' sound, it is already 'on' in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Sounds and Vibration Patterns > Sent Mail. I've tried selecting a different sound and then selecting the 'swoosh' noise again but the problem persists.

Some emails make the 'swoosh' sound whilst others (probably those where I am forwarding a picture or video via email), don't - I merely get a very brief sound (which I've called a 'burp').

Any further ideas? I've already tried a 'hard' reset of the phone which hasn't fixed the issue

Kind regards

RB

Hi Rational Beef,

We understand that when starting a video that you've recorded, you have to unmute it first. You're also experiencing an issue when sending an email, not hearing the "Swoosh" sound. To resolve the video starting out muted, go to Settings > Mail, and disable "Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos".

In regard to not hearing the sent email sound, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Sent Mail, and make sure Swoosh is selected: Change iPhone sounds and vibrations.

Take care.

Hi Rational Beef,

We apologize for the confusion. The section to disable "Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos" is under Settings > Photos.

Regarding the "Swoosh" sound, the information below will help us more.

-When selecting another sound in Settings, did it play? Did you leave set to that sound long enough to determine if it worked when sending emails?

-During the time that you do not hear the "Swoosh" sound, is the Ringer/Switch button in silent mode? Having it in silent mode will affect sounds such as sending emails.

-Do you have multiple email accounts set up? If so, does it happen with all of them?

-Does the message send right away or does it move to the outbox and take a few minutes to send. If it takes some time, you may not get the Swoosh sound.

We will wait on your response.

Hi jdo,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll try to address each of your questions in turn, my answers are in bold italic.

We apologize for the confusion. The section to disable "Auto-Play Videos and Live Photos" is under Settings > Photos. That's okay. I didn't know whether it was a slip at your end or that the setting should have been in the place given in the post and my phone/iOS was odd for some reason. The post did ,however, help me to do an appropriate Google search to find out where that particular setting was- so it was all good in the end.

Regarding the "Swoosh" sound, the information below will help us more.

-When selecting another sound in Settings, did it play? Yes

Did you leave set to that sound long enough to determine if it worked when sending emails? No. I obviously need to test this.

-During the time that you do not hear the "Swoosh" sound, is the Ringer/Switch button in silent mode? No

Having it in silent mode will affect sounds such as sending emails.

-Do you have multiple email accounts set up? If so, does it happen with all of them? I do, but generally only use one which is exhibiting the 'no swoosh' issue. The 'no swoosh' appears to be when an email contains pictures and not when it doesn't (meaning ordinary emails make the 'swoosh' sound).

-Does the message send right away or does it move to the outbox and take a few minutes to send. If it takes some time, you may not get the Swoosh sound. Sometimes emails go straight away with the 'swoosh' sound but often (almost every time in fact) emails containing pictures go to the outbox first. Sometimes these emails will then go from the outbox automatically, more often than not, I have to resend them from the outbox [As an aside, this is rather annoying - is there any way of 'fixing' this so that it doesn't happen?]

Hi Rationale Beef,

We appreciate you responding to the questions. You've determined that the issue occurs when an email with an attachment goes to the Outbox first. The time that it takes for the email to actually send depends on the size of the attachment, a reliable signal, etc. You mentioned that sometimes you have to resend the email in order for it to actually go through. Does this happen when using cellular data? If so, confirm that you have a reliable signal and if you notice it is weak when attempting to send the email, contact your wireless carrier.

If issue happens when connected to a Wi-Fi network, check to make sure it has a reliable signal and if not test with a different Wi-Fi network .

Regards.
