how do I eject time machine?

If TM has finished the latest Backup - Drag and Drop the Drive Icon on Desktop to Trash. It should dismount the drive. That or Right Click the Icon of the Drive and choose Eject. Both methods perform the same action.

or you could click the TM's eject button in your finder.
