Previewing sound effects does not work.

I am a middle school teacher and have a handful of remote students who are having trouble with iMovie on a MacBook Air. When looking though sound effects and music, the sound cannot be previewed. The play button does not play any of the audio. The computer's volume is up and the audio in the timeline is working.

Any suggestions for how to get previewing audio to work?

So, when you double click on the effects and songs listed in the audio pane they won't play but they will play in the timeline. Correct? I can't tell whether this is happening on each of your students' individual computers or on just one central computer. Or are the computers centrally connected to a server? I cannot replicate the issue on my Mac.

In any event the songs should be playable in the audio pane, so perhaps there is a corrupt preference that is causing the issue. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.  See if that solves it. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your projects.
