podcasts waiting and waiting

My podcasts on my iPhone don't download manually or automatically for that matter. I've un-synced them from my MacBook Pro. I also have limited the number of episodes to one week for daily podcasts.

When I go to Downloaded, and Downloading, the episodes are listed, but all have a 'pause' icon and all say "waiting".

Waiting for what?

I'm connected to WiFi and have enabled cellular for podcasts.

Are they trying to sync to my AppleWatch??

CarPlay and Podcasts ignores "downloaded" list from iPhone I keep only 3 episodes of my podcasts on my iPhone. I play my podcasts from the Downloaded list, allowing me to play the oldest first and play them in downloaded order. CarPlay in my car has no route to reach the downloaded list. When the episode I'm listening to finishes, it goes on to play other episodes from the same show. It seems CarPlay has been built to deliberately exclude the Downloaded list. It also seems CarPlay ignores the choice made from my iPhone. Has anyone come across any circumventions or resolutions? [Edit: the device in the post details is incorrect.
