I have a new (and am new to the MacBook world) MacBook Air 2020 and use an external monitor.
The issue is, when I switch from the external monitor to the MacBook's screen, the image switches to a generic apple picture.

Check and see if your external monitor is set to a different work space. If so, that could be why the background image is different. This article has information about work spaces and how to add or remove them which you may find helpful:

I guess I didn’t explain it properly.
Maybe I’ll ask a question instead. How do I keep the the same background image that I chose while in my docking station with external monitor?
I don’t understand why the picture changes. It’s coming from the same laptop.
