Are you telling us your current TV does not have an HDMI connection, if it does then your new Apple TV should work fine. There was no mention in your original post about connecting to a sound system and I was not rude, I was matter of fact. To answer your question about downloading apps to an Apple TV 3rd generation, sorry no those models do not have the ability.

If you are referring to connecting an Apple TV to a Home Theater Receiver or some other type of sound system in order to play sound from a current Apple TV model (Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K) to it there must be an HDMI connection. If you mean your sound system does not have HDMI input you may need to look for another solution.

The Airport Express would be a more apt recommendation for what you are trying to do. Even with the older Apple TV's this was hit or miss at best and the 3rd gen hasn't been sold for quite some time so you would be having to locate it on the used market anyway.
