MacBook Air Speakers not working

The volume of my speakers is very low. I can't hear anything, even at the maximum volume, using the inbuilt speakers. I can hear when I use headphones or external speakers but not otherwise. I have tried checking the output volume and the device for sound output. I have also tried the steps given for this problem in the FAQ's. Nothing worked.
