Massive "other" storage space

I have a 4TB SSD on my 2020 27inch iMac.

1TB is used for bootcamp leaving me with 3TB for my BIG SUR mac partition.

my ssd is showing 2.87 TB used with 1.89TB of data showing as other

I have used omnidisksweeper to see where all the data is being used

However it is only showing only 1TB being used which coincides with the size of my clone drive which has 2TB free and 1 TB used. ( and my rough reckoning of all the programs and data I have)

So where is my missing freespace and what is filling the "other" part of my storage?

I'm flummoxed and at the point of wiping my drive and reinstalling from the clone.

Thanks for the response.

I have used the get info pane which is where Im getting confused between the actual data I can see is used and the massive amount of data (2TB) which I can not find anywhere.

I have just used daisy disk which spotted the missing 2TB as purgable snapshots which I deleted. Now everything is adding up again and I have 2TB free space once more.

The Other category is a potpourri of files which can include:

• System temporary files

• macOS system folders

• Archives and disk images (.zip, .iso, etc. - often found in the Downloads folder)

• Personal user data

• Files from the user’s library (Application Support, iCloud files, screensavers, etc.)

• Cache files: browser, Mail

• Mail messages & attachments

• Fonts, plugins, extensions

• Safari reading list

• iTunes backups

• Crud resulting from jailbreaking your iDevice

• Game data

• Saved data files

• Call history

• Notes

• Media

• Voice memos

• Other files that are not recognized by a Spotlight search

• Media files that cannot be classified by Spotlight as a media file because they are located inside of a package

They can be located anywhere on your hard drive. The files that you have control over are located in the Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Movies folders.  You can use either of these two free apps, GrandPerspective  or OmniDiscSweeper, to find the largest files on your drive so you can determine if they can be deleted or moved to an external HD for storage.

Note 1: you can empty the Downloads folder after the apps and/or updates that were downloaded have been installed or applied.  Many users have found a couple of Gigabytes of files in their Downloads folder which are no longer needed.

Note 2: To get the most accurate measure of free space on a drive or volume use the Get Info pane for that item, i.e. Control (right) - click on the item and select Get Info from the contextual menu.
