Disappearing Hard drive space in Big Sur

27" iMac 2020. model. 500GB SSD Flash drive with Big Sur installed from Apple New.

I just migrated data from an older iMac with around 250GB of data.

My mac now says I have just 40GB left but I cannot find where the data is or what it could be.

So I deleted another 60GB of old pics and the available space now says I have 37GB. Its going down, not up!

Ive deleted the trash and it does not increase with the amount of data I am deleting. Restarted and still no sign. This is really stuffing me up as I need to load more data to do my job and when I go to manage this under Apple about this mac, Apple invites me to buy icloud storage. I dont want it Apple, I want my hard drive space back!! Can anyone help please?

Welcome and only hope with a careful inventory of what is required and what can be removed, software wise - the situation maybe workable.

Sometimes a restart in Safe Mode ( Shift ) immediately at restart will clear some cache files which will be recreated as needed will further improve the space.

Another method would to reindex the drive Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac. Sometimes - the reported Space issue will suddenly increate once this action has been taken.

The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other " Category

  • Other: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

Thanks P.Phillips. The Old mac was running 10.11.6 El Capitan. That OS was the end of the line for that iMac.

I deleted the Time Machine Snapshots and then I gained 20GB. This actually showed I had 20GB more space than before.

I read the Other: category from Apple saying that this area is needed by the System but its over 200GB in size. So not happy paying out for the 500GB SSD Flash and only getting 250GB to put my 250GB data on and no room left to work!
