iPhone 7 plus hacked?

Hello. I have an iPhone 7 plus (and an iMac). On Friday it was pointed out to me that I had sent a photo to a WhatsApp group I am in - although I hadn't. It was a photo of a brick wall. It was crooked and looked like the photographer was falling over as he took it. On it was written "lol". I didn't take it, send it or edit it!! It had appeared on the WhatsApp site at 1725 on Friday. I then looked in my photos and there it was - without the "lol" - and was recorded as being taken at 1715.

It is almost as if someone had control of my phone, taken a silly photo, edited it and sent it to the WhatsApp group. Is this possible?

I should mention that 3 weeks ago I received a video on Messenger with a note asking if it is me in the video. Shortly after all my "friends" on Facebook received the same message. I had clicked on the video but not played it. I contacted Facebook who took me through various procedures (password etc) and said I was now fine. I also changed my bank password.

I'd be very grateful for any thoughts - what should I do?

The most likely explanation is your device passcode is known, or somebody got your finger on Touch ID without you realizing it.

Change your social media passwords and particularly change your device and Mac passcodes.

If your devices are showing weak- or known-password-related errors and maybe you’ve re-used some passwords, start fixing that now; use new and unique passwords.

iOS / iPadOS devices cannot be hacked or infected with Virus / Malware / Spyware if it is updated to the latest iOS/iPadOS unless you have intentionally downloaded spurious software or unauthorized apps directly from the internet and installed on your device or/and have Jail Broken.

It (Hacking) also depends on how careful are you in sharing sensitive and valuable information pertaining to your iPhone such as Passcode, Password etc with your friends and family members.

Be careful when sharing the device's sensitive and valuable information with friends and family members.

Thumb Rules:

  1. Enable  Guided Access before handing over an iPhone to kids
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jail Break
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device and payment methods
  5. Beware of Phishing
