Airdrop

So my iPhone 7 wants bluetooth AND wifi active for Airdrop, but my MacBook (Late 2009) wants only wifi active, either way I get no option to be "discovered" on the MacBook, even though I meet the requirements (barely) but still meet them. I was hoping one of the two devices would know what to use to connect. Apparently a hardware compatibility issue, I have work a around but Airdrop would be easier.
