Note, you posted to the Yosemite forum, which indicates either you are running Yosemite, or you don't know where to post.
Yosemite doesn't support the showing of the PIN if Multifactor Authentication was set for the AppleID.
Only Sierra 10.12.4 and later support that.

If you didn't lock your device, and your device was out of your hands, you may have to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Center to unlock.
