Mac mini M1 - internet slows or stops working when a USB device is plugged in to USB-A port

I've just noticed if I plug a device into one of the USB ports (the second USB-A port - the first that is nearer the edge does not cause the issue.)

I've tried it with a webcam (important to have internet working with this for Zoom!) and with charging some headphones.

At first the wifi wasn't connecting and I spent hours wondering why. I removed the headphones charging and it suddenly worked.

Now wifi stays connected, but webpages don't load, or rather it seems the web browser has to think more before eventually loading the page. I don't think it is the internet connection exactly, as it seems to eventually work, but rather something that is affecting apps like Safari somehow?? (Just tried on Firefox and it is the same) Is this even possible????

I can recreate the problem by simply connecting a device and fix it by disconnecting it. The USB-A port on the edge does not create the same issue and webpages load super quick.

Is my USB-A port a dud, or is this a known issue? Is this fixable?

Thanks

Rob

Poorly shielded USB cables and devices can also cause wireless issues.

see what Apple say's about it at > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201542

A metal shelf, antenna on the bottom, poorly shielded USB cables/devices, all contribute in some way.

Just discovered something new - I recently bought an IKEA monitor stand. It's a metal base. The mini is on top of it, next to the monitor. If I put something else under the mini, like a book, this behaviour instantly stops. As in the webpage/Safari will not be reacting, then suddenly if I lift the mini or put something under it, it instantly loads. Works every time.

So there is something about it resting on a metal surface that is causing this.

Is this normal?

Solution so far: put something under the mini. (I prefer to keep it on top of the stand now because the ports are easier to access and because it seems to get a better wifi signal with that small amount of extra height.) Still, seems a bit odd.

But only with a USB device connected.

Wifi actually works better on the metal stand than where it was previously. So it is the combination of connecting a USB device (and only to one of the ports) and the metal surface that causes the problem.

So I don’t think it is as simple as saying the metal is blocking reception, when with all of the other ports it works fine.

does anybody know if this is normal and expected behaviour?
