How can I stop my iPhone from seeking cell service?

I was told that if I turn off the cell data button, I can leave the WiFi and Bluetooth active to use the phone for text messages and playing music etc via WiFi. However, the battery usage information in settings still shows the "No Cell Coverage" as the biggest user of the battery.
