I walk and hike on my own. Can Apple send an alert to someone if my phone is turned off or broken so they know to come look for me?
If I’ve been attacked I don’t want the search to start hours later when someone realizes I should have been home by now.

The Apple Watch has a feature where it will call the emergency phone number should the wearer fall. The Apple Watch detects the fall and makes the call. It also gives you an opportunity to cancel the call as well.

Meanwhile, you can try out the Find My app with which you can share your location with someone and send that person notifications when you leave your home (or any specific location) and arrive back home.
