What do badges mean

In the notification area what does the term badges mean?

I believe that's when you see a little red circle overlaying the app icon with a number in it..

ie if you have 3 unread text messages, there would be a little red 'badge' on the Messages icon with a 3 in it

Badges What are badges? When I am selecting my preferred Settings for various apps etc., there is often an option to turn "badges" on or off. I don't understand how badges are used or who uses them? Are they some sort of useful tool for Apple Inc., or are they something that will provide a valuable service to me? Lol? Please explain in layman's terms.... lol... What are badges I am learning the many wonderful and endless, it seems, things that I can do with my IPhone SE20. Badges, for instance. I got here via siri. This is not an important issue but I just feel out of my depth. Thanks
