AirPods won't stay connected to my iPhone 12

My airpods-do NOT stay connected to my Iphone 12- sw is all updated and when I received my Airpods Wireless charger (gift) I Thought they would be better- unfortunately I MUST reboot my phone and they will connect and will be able to use for a single call- they will still allow link/connection- but I cannot hear anything- it looses its connection...
