Apple activation lock not disabled for trade in

I recently got up the courage to purchase a new Apple iPhone 12 Pro online, and sent in my old iPhone X in as a trade-in. Apparently I neglected to properly disable the activation lock and the trade in has been rejected. If I have the phone sent back to me, can I resubmit it as a trade in after I properly disable it?

thank you! i did contact support and a wonderfully helpful Apple rep helped me login to the cloud and remove my old phone. it was super easy. then i was directed to call another super helpful rep who was able to start the process for the trade in to be reviewed again. fingers crossed!
