How to get clock face to show on apple watch when using pedometer

I use a pedometer app and when I have it activated my apple watch face defaults to a completely black face with the time in the top right corner and my steps and miles and time on the right side. I want my clock face to show and for this stuff to run in the background. How do I get the clock watch face to stay on rather than this ugly data face? It's annoying to always have to press the crown to get the nice clock face to display. See photos (2nd on is the one I would like to display all the time). Thank you.
