Whether you are able to update your iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by your iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.2.

Newer models, not appearing in this list, are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 14.4.2.

If your iPad is relatively recent (i.e., can run recent versions of iOS/iPadOS) and cannot update Apps, this support page may be helpful with troubleshooting:

If you want or need to access to Apps requiring a more recent versions of iOS than your computer can support, you will need to replace your iPad with a newer or current model that supports iPadOS14.

You will have to update the Youtube app yourself. Apple does not do this for you.

If your iPad cannot upgrade/update any farther to get the recent YouTube aop, then your iPad is too old.

You will need to access the YouTube Website from a Web browser and login to the YouTube Website using your YouTube login credentials.

Writing about Web browsers, if your iPad is really old, that old default iOS Safari Web browser is too old, not secure and not safe to use to access the Internet, any longer.

There are virtually NO MORE third party Web browsers left for very old iPads!

Available and more popular third party Web browser choices are pretty much GONE, now.

We cannot update YouTube for you, because A) we don’t have access to your iPad and B) your iPad is simply too old to run the newest version of the YouTube app. The only way for you to get the newest version of the YouTube app is to buy a newer iPad. The replies above have given instructions on how you can watch YouTube without the app.

The company that decides which version of YouTube is available for what devices and operating systems is YouTube, not Apple. Apple does not own YouTube and Apple has no say in what versions of YouTube are available to the public.

Your iPad is too old!

Use one of the Web browsers I recommended and use the YouTube Website, instead!

The app is just a portal to the actual Website anyways.
