Since installing iOS 14.4.2 on an iPhone 12, the Apple mail app has been running in the background overnight and draining the battery while the phone is idle. I don't even use the Apple mail app since I use the gmail app for email. I rebooted the phone but it didn't help. This started happening after installing the 14.4.2 update. The idle battery usage was excellent before this update.
I'll update this if the problem goes away over time.
Here's the battery usage from overnight. No apps were running. Before installing iOS 14.4.2, the battery usage was close to flat overnight. Now it's a constant drain with nothing running.
I'm probably going to downgrade to the previous version of iOS until this bug is fixed.
I’m having the exact problem. Overnight battery drain without any apps on background. Have you uninstalled the mail app? does it helps?
14.4.2 = Drain was 25% to 30% overnight
I’ve downgraded yesterday.
14.4.1= Drain was 7% and 12% the next day.
Does uninstalling the Mail app helps? Since I have Gmail, i don’t need this. Thanks in advance.
I would say 82% to 76% overnight to when I woke up. (I don't recall the % when I stopped using my phone last night.)
Which is a huge improvement from 80-90% to 20% overnight (before deleting my email account in Mail).
I never had an issue with Mail until I updated to 14.4.2

I just payed attention this morning and saw this , I woke up in 3am , lokked a bit of internet , used 3 mins of flashlight and for period of 30 mins my battery went down for 4%
Is this an issue with 14.4.2 or what?
On a hunch, I reinstalled iOS 14.4.2. The overnight battery usage is a little worse than 14.4.1, but not as bad as my previous experience. Don't know why it got better.
It also helps if I unload all apps at the end of the day using the Vol-Up-Vol-Down-Power Off | long-press on the virtual Home button trick.
After downgrading to 14.4.1 here is the overnight battery usage:
Charge the device while you sleep.
No more drain.
It drains all the time, not just at night.
Then charge it when you are not using it.
That's exactly what mine looks like too.
Turns out the mail app usage was a red herring. It was iOS 14.4.2 causing the drain.
I do use the mail app for some non-mail services like contacts, so it wasn't the actual problem.
Yep, me too. I removed an email account from the Mail app (but left Notes) and no more battery drain overnight.
What’s your battery health and how much overnight drain you are seeing now? Without Wifi, Mobile Data and Background apps.
