Apple ID problem in System Preferences

In System Preferences I am being prompted to Update Settings but I can't sign in and when I click on the Forgotten Password link I see an Unknown Problem message. I was able to sign in to iCloud in Safari using TouchID. What is the Unknown Problem and how do I solve it? With Touch ID, I don't need to remember passwords but the computer needs to.
