Metadata not showing - 2011 27" iMac SDD APFS High Sierra

Hi everyone,

I just re-installed MacOS HighSierra on my older iMac 27" 2011 with a new SSD formatted APFS and surprised to see that I don't see any basic metadata of my photos when I right click -> "Get Info". So I tested the below

  1. Main startup SDD APFS High Sierra = "Get Info" = nothing
  2. External storage formatted APFS = "Get Info" = nothing
  3. External storage formatted ExFAT = "Get info" = Yes I can see basic metadata.
  • Did not try format MS-DOS (FAT)

This is important because I usually search images or do my basic photo filing by typing the camera name e.g Fujifilm, Pentax, iPhone etc.

Is this supposed to be the case with APFS or is my installation "corrupted"? or should I reformat and reinstall HighSierra again with OX Journaled?

Thanks so much in advance.

Cheers,

J

After you install an OS or reinstall an OS it will take your mac some time before the Spotlight index has completed,

and this can affect the amount of information you see.

If you have a lot of storage attached in the form of external drives this could be a very long time.

If you want to check if Spotlight is indexing click on Spotlight in the menubar

enter a word in the Search field if you see a progress bar then your mac is indexing.

Give it time.

Another thing to note is that even though your internal SSD is formatted as APFS

it is advised for macOS High Sierra to have any external disks formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

or ex-FAT if they are going to be shared with PC's.
