I am having the same issue with my brand new Mac mini M1. I have tried display port cable and thunderbolt cable but when the unit wakes from sleep no picture comes up. Only fix is to pull thunderbolt cable out and plug back in. I had the hardware in to the apple store. They checked everything and even reinstalled all software but the issue won't stop.
I also talked with the apple senior advisor, they advise me to reinstall the mac to isolate the root cause, wasting fo time, I rejected it.
thunderbolt cable performs better than HDMI, but still not perfect
Disable sleep, not needed for the M1.
do you means that the setting:
Energy Saver -> Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off
Yes, check it.
I am thinking that why you think M1 need to sleep when it's idle ?
but actually I checked this feature before, the problem was still there.
Keep it checked, nothing to lose.
