overdub doesn't record with volume in Imovie

when I follow the normal procedure to overdub. I notice a new recording field, but no wave is shown and no sound is heard when you play. it is as if recorded without noice. although the microphone is working. I also checked with an external microphone.

What can be wrong?

It could be that the microphone needs to be enabled for iMovie. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy and click on Microphone in the left side bar of the Security & Privacy Window. Then scroll to iMovie in the right hand side pane and check the box next to the iMovie icon. You will need to click on the little lock icon at the bottom left of the screen and enter in your administrator password in order to make changes.
