Why is Dark Mode Turning Off Automatically?

One of the joys of the Apple ecosystem is that things just work as they are supposed to, until they don't. I recently upgraded from a mid-2010 iMac to an M1 Mac Mini, and for the most part, it has been great.

Running a 32-inch LG Ergo Monitor is great, but even though I have it set to Dark Mode, it seems like every morning it reverts back to auto mode.

Is anyone else having a similar issue? Any solutions? Is this just a bug?

Mac mini 2018 or later

Could be a corrupt preferences file.

Click once on the Desktop, click Go in the menubar then select Go To Folder.

Enter this text

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

press Go.

A Finder window will open with the file highlighted, move it to the Trash.

Restart your mac, the file will be regenerated .

Set your mac to Dark Mode.

Restart your mac and see if the setting holds.

Whilst the Preferences folder is open look for any preferences that have any alphanumeric characters

after the .plist extension, this is an indicator of a corrupt preferences file.

Move them to the Trash empty the Trash.

Restart.

You mention you use an app to maintain and optimise your mac.

Macs do not need any apps that claim to maintain, optimise or clean your mac

it is more likely it will make your mac perform worse.

Contact the developer of the software to get full uninstall instructions.

Macs look after themselves pretty well.

Use Wrote " One possibility is a program that I use to maintain and optimize MacOS. " What program is being used to maintain and Optimize macOS ??

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS. The Built-in Security of Big Sur is all that is required.
