does iPhone contacts accept vcf files in version 4.0 format?

Trying to import contacts via iCloud. I created a created a vcf file in format 4.0, and iCloud says it could not read it.

Yes indeed, that is the method to import a vCard. When I did that for a vCard in version 4.0 format, iCloud said it could not read it.

To answer my own question: I edited the file to change it to a version 3.0 format vcf file. Then iCloud accepted it without any complaints. So it is possible that imports have to be in version 3.0 format.
