When my daughter in law sends me a text, instead of her name showing up and the message appearing, a blue dot shows up next to her contact picture at the top of the screen. I have to click on her photo to see and send messages. Why did this suddenly change and it's only her messages that this happens with??

We see that you're not properly notified when getting a message from your daughter-in-law; we want to make sure this is working as expected.
It sounds like you might have Hide Alerts enabled for that message thread, detailed on our Apple Support page: Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
This should help get those particular alerts enabled again to resolve the issue.
