Trying to get Microsoft Word on my new Macbook Pro

Hi. I just upgraded my computer to the new Macbook Pro. Now my version of Microsoft Word is not compatible with this computer. I only use Word when I need to send a document to someone who does not have a Mac. If I choose to open my current Word documents with Pages, can I send them to a non Mac? Or, if I use the online version of Word at Office.com, can I send documents from there?

Or is my only option to buy the 2019 Office? (I don't want the subscription).

Thank you.

Pages can convert documents to Word format either by using the Export option in the File Menu, or by choosing a format from the Share menu after you select the Mail app.

You can also download the free LibreOffice suite. It handles Word documents directly.

And yes, the online Office Apps will work to.

In general unless it's very very specific Word only formatting, both Pages and Libre Office will work fine.

It's going to be very specific formatting options in Word that may not translate correctly. I would try either option out first, since they are free, there's no issue, and see if they work for you correctly.

I have yet to have any issues with Word documents. Normally Power Point is what has a few more kinks.

Thank you. I will look into the LibreOffice suite.

Be aware that if you are sending Word documents from LibreOffice to Microsoft Word users the documents may not retain the formatting you used. In a document sharing/collaboration environment it is better that all parties use the same tools otherwise a lot of time and effort will be expended on reformatting documents.

So the only option to retain formatting would be to buy Microsoft Word 2019? Or would the Office.com retain formatting?

Is Word still the standard for sharing documents, or has Google docs taken over? I write in Scrivener, and the past few writing workshops I participate in I have had to share in Google docs. Those were limited shares and I just re-formatted, but I wouldn't want to do that for a whole novel.
