Trying to get Microsoft Word on my new Macbook Pro

Pages can convert documents to Word format either by using the Export option in the File Menu, or by choosing a format from the Share menu after you select the Mail app.

You can also download the free LibreOffice suite. It handles Word documents directly.

And yes, the online Office Apps will work to.

Either method you mention will work. The problem is that you will lose some document formatting if you use Pages. Other options include LibreOffice or GoogleDocs. But again you will lose some formatting.

In general unless it's very very specific Word only formatting, both Pages and Libre Office will work fine.

It's going to be very specific formatting options in Word that may not translate correctly. I would try either option out first, since they are free, there's no issue, and see if they work for you correctly.

I have yet to have any issues with Word documents. Normally Power Point is what has a few more kinks.

Word 2019, Word 365, and Office online will retain the formatting between them. Third party apps are not 100% compatible with Microsoft Word when it comes to formatting and capability.

Be aware that if you are sending Word documents from LibreOffice to Microsoft Word users the documents may not retain the formatting you used. In a document sharing/collaboration environment it is better that all parties use the same tools otherwise a lot of time and effort will be expended on reformatting documents.
