Software downloading issue

Our iMac (2017) tried to download a new software when we re-started the device. It failed because it hasn’t got enough space on the hard drive. We can not delete anything since it won’t fully start. So far we’ve tried resetting PRAM, ran diagnostics (they came back with nothing), re-installing OS and starting it on an old Time Machine back up. All of it failed.

Does anyone know of anything else that might work? Can we fix it ourselves? Do we need to take it to an Apple Store, or is everything completely lost?

Thanks in advanced

If your drive is too full to restart you will need another Mac and connect the two using Target Disk Mode. Once connected move large libraries such as your photos, music and movies to an external HD such as a OWC Mercury Elite Pro. Once the libraries are moved, then try to restart the Mac in Safe Mode per Use Safe Mode to isolate issues with your Mac and move the libraries that are still on the internal drive to the Trash and empty the Trash. Then restart normally, connect the External Hard Disk and you should be fine.

If you cannot do these actions, please take it to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider and they will be able to assist.
