Why no ports on new MacBook Air?

My new Mac Book Air does not have a USB port. It is very confusing on what is necessary to hook up an external disc. Why did Apple eliminate ports on laptops?

There is no USB ports on MacBook Air M1 model.

But it comes with Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports.

Thunderbolt / USB 4

These Mac models have Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports:

Use these ports with displays and other devices that connect using either a Thunderbolt 3  cable or USB-C ? cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you might be able to use an adapter to connect it.

The new MacBook Airs come with 2 USB ports. Apple did not eliminate anything. They just moved to new modern USB-C type USB ports.

You would need a USB-C to USB-A adapter or Hub.

I can personally recommend one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Ofima-MacBook-Thunderbolt-2016-2020-2018-2020/dp/B08864SHJL/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=Mixmart+USB-C+hub&qid=1617559018&sr=8-9

I use it with a M1 MacBook Air and it works fine.
