I need to update it to 10.14 or later for basic softwares to be installed.

If YES - follow this link. Be certain to use Safari in Links in following page as Others may not function. Safari will open a Redirect to open Apple Store where you can download Mojave.
Very Important - before attempting - make a Time Machine Backup.
Also Important - if you have any AntiVirus Software installed now - Remove it ONLY via the Developers Instructions. This Software is not needed, interferes with the normal operation of the OS, causes havoc and Will Interfere with the upGrade Process.

I was able to download it.
However for installing I got stuck.
It says I may not install to Macintosh HD because it is currently being encrypted.
What does that mean and what is the alternative?

You and FileVault Enabled - so you have to wait for the Encryption to finish - do not know how long that will take but once it has finished - you can Install.

It still gives the same message of encryption.
